Wrap up warm for the end of July! Arctic blast set to bring record low temperatures for the middle of summer
The sunny highs of July are numbered, with a dramatic drop in temperature next week when a second polar blast hits large parts of the U.S.
Temperatures are forecast to be up to 20 degrees below average for this time of year, with some places experiencing a chill more usual in the fall.
A jet stream from polar regions will bring the unseasonable weather in on Sunday, with a band of thunderstorms leading it in Ohio and along the East Coast.
Big chill: A large part of the U.S. will experience fall-like temperatures next week
The storms are likely to bring hail, strong winds, and a risk of tornadoes in and around the Ohio valley, as well as in parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
The change comes just days after a devastating tornado killed two and injured 31 when it touched down in Chesapeake Bay on Thursday morning.
The predicted storm front is expected to pass by the start of the week, clearing the way for brighter, but also cooler, days, according to the Washington Post.
In Washington DC, temperatures are predicted to fall as low as the 50s on Wednesday morning, with the city struggling to get above 80F the rest of the week.
Cold front: The cooler air will start to affect the eastern half of the U.S. over the weekend, with storms likely on Sunday
Unseasonable: An arctic blast will bring cooler temperatures and less humidity as the week progresses
It will be the second arctic blast for July, after a mid-month drop caused by a polar vortex.
Although the summer highs usually experienced in the last week of July will be absent, so too will the humidity.
The latter half of the week should bring a pleasant break for many areas in the east, with bright but fresh-feeling days.
