Spanish troops given Iraq pull-out date
Last updated at 15:38 27 April 2004
The last of Spain's troops in Iraq will have left by May 27, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told parliament today.
"It is foreseen that by May 27 there will not be any Spanish troops in Iraqi territory. All of them will be in Spain or in international waters on their way to Spain," said Zapatero.
On his second day in office on April 18 the premier ordered Spain's 1,400 troops to return home as soon as possible.
Spanish soldiers pulled out of Najaf today, leaving mainly US forces to deal with uprisings in the southern Iraqi holy city.
