A post-mortem examination was taking place today on a prisoner who died only hours after appearing in court charged in connection with the discovery of cannabis worth £35 million.
Remand prisoner Michael Minshall, 44, from Stoke-on-Trent, was found hanged in his cell at HMP Liverpool on Friday evening.
Earlier he had appeared before magistrates along with two other men charged with the importation and supply of cannabis.
The charges followed the discovery of the drugs during raids on two freight containers at Seaforth docks in Merseyside.
A spokeswoman for the Prison Service said: "I can confirm that Mr Minshall was discovered hanged in
his cell at HMP Liverpool.
"A post-mortem examination is due to take place."
