Running a bit ruff: Lucky pup travels five miles trapped in car engine before being rescued without a scratch

A South Florida puppy truly experienced Independence Day on July 4 when it was rescued from underneath the hood of a car after being trapped for a 5-mile drive.

Firefighters gently removed the black pooch from between the steering mechanism and an axle on Thursday afternoon in Dania Beach after the couple in the vehicle noticed it handling strangely.

'They realized the engine wasn't purring. In fact, it was actually running a little ruff,' Broward County  Sheriff Fire Rescue Mike Jachles told WSVN.com.

The scary trip began in Hallandale Beach, Greater Miami. 'Hallandale Beach to Dania Beach, so that's three cities if you count Hollywood in the middle,' Jachles explained.

You gotta go through Hollywood to get to Dania Beach so it could have been anywhere from a 4, 5, 10-mile trip,' he said.

It isn't yet clear how the puppy got stuck or whether the dog has an owner, but firefighters were able to free the hot animal within two minutes.

'It was like the Indy 500 pit crew out there,' Jachles quipped. 'They had the wheel off the PT Cruiser. They were working gingerly to rescue the dog that was trapped up in there.'

The thirsty beast was quickly whisked away for some water and then to a vet in Hollywood to make sure it was suffering no ill effects.

But on initial appearances it seemed that that the fortunate pup was fine.

'It appeared outwardly that there were no injuries. This was one lucky dog who actually had more like nine lives,' said Jachles.
