AK-47 disappears from Army barracks
An investigation has been launched after an AK-47 assault rifle went missing from an Army barracks close to Buckingham Palace.
The weapon, nicknamed the widow-maker, disappeared from Wellington Barracks in Westminster and MoD police have been called in to investigate.
A spokesman for the MOD said: "An AK-47 went missing from Wellington Barracks. MoD Police are investigating the disappearance of the weapon. The disappearance of any weapon merits investigation. A weapon in the wrong hands is something we would always seek to prevent happening."
It is believed that the weapon was a deactivated trophy from a peace-keeping tour in Kosovo in 1999 that could be made to fire again.
The MoD said the Russian-made rifle, which is capable of firing 600 rounds a minute, was "not standard issue" for any British troops.
