200 villagers respond to call appeal
Detectives hunting the killer of an 83-year-old retired soldier are today sifting through more than 200 calls from members of the public offering information.
Two days ago police issued a tape recording of a 999 call made following the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Workman.
Yesterday police said the release of the tape had prompted around 70 calls and today a spokeswoman said the number of calls had now risen to more than 200.
Lieutenant Colonel Workman was found dead in the doorway of his home in Furneux Pelham, Hertfordshire, at around 7am on Thursday, January 8.
Police believe he was shot dead with a single round from a 12-bore shotgun between 8pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday, January 7.
The 999 call was made from a public kiosk in Braughing - three miles away - at 4.57am the next day.
Police believe the anonymous caller was an elderly man who lived locally and they have urged him to come forward.
Detective Superintendent Richard Mann today reiterated the appeal for the caller or anyone who knew him to contact police.
He told the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme that police had not yet heard from anyone who was certain that they knew who the caller was.
Last night a meeting was held in Furneux Pelham for villagers concerned about issues arising from the murder.
Journalists were denied access to the meeting and
it is not clear how severely the police were criticised by villagers for their handling of the
case.
Police said they had denied reporters access after villagers took a vote.
