Live reindeer... the latest must-have for your Christmas party (but you'll have to hurry, they're getting booked up)
Rudolph and his pals have joined the festive party A-list, it seems.
Reindeer are now the must-have guests for any fashionable Christmas gathering.
In fact, if the number of Google searches is any guide, they are even more popular than Santa Claus.
One couple who decided to raise a herd of 20 have been inundated with bookings.
In demand: Reindeer are proving increasingly popular at Christmas parties, weddings and schools
Angie Flint, a former new media company director, and husband Martin, an ex-policeman, said the animals have been hugely popular since they brought them to their Leicestershire farm six years ago.
‘We’ve been busy since August, and most of our bookings are in central London,’ said Mrs Flint, who runs Real Reindeer. ‘We take ten of the males out, usually in teams of two or four, and they seem to really enjoy the travelling – they just sit down in the livestock trailer and relax.’
Special guests: Reindeer even made a visit to No 10 Downing Street to surprise children of servicemen fighting around the world
‘We’ve done a lot of winter weddings, with everything from having the reindeers greeting guests at the reception to delivering the bride in a sleigh.’
Peter Fitzgerald, sales director at Google UK, said: ‘Over the last two years, searches for reindeer have overtaken searches for Father Christmas by 5 per cent.’
Reindeer first appeared pulling a sleigh in the 1823 poem A Visit From St Nicholas.
Whisper it quietly, but if their celebrity status dwindles, Ikea sells reindeer meat – a delicacy in Scandinavia – every winter.
