Six held under terror act

Police investigating a "large-scale" cheque and credit card fraud are questioning six men under the Terrorism Act.

The men - all in their mid-20s and of North African origin - are being held by Sussex Police after they were arrested in Eastbourne earlier in the week.

A police spokesman said they were being held under section 17 of the Terrorism Act 2000, which relates to the arranging of funds or property for the purposes of terrorism.

The arrests are not connected to those made elsewhere in the country this week.

The spokesman said one man was arrested on Tuesday night, while the others were taken into custody on Thursday and Friday. Two are from Eastbourne, two from Hastings and two from London.

Items have been seized from a flat in Eastbourne but police refused to say what they were. Officers are continuing to search the property.

All six men are currently in custody at police stations across Sussex and will continue to be interviewed over the weekend.

Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo said: "At this stage there is no connection with the arrests that have been made under the Terrorism Act elsewhere in the country.

"This is a Sussex Police operation but we have also been working closely with officers from the Metropolitan Police's Anti-Terrorism Branch."
