Footballer charged over crash
Detectives have today charged West Bromwich Albion footballer Lee Hughes with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident after a car passenger died when his vehicle was in collision with the star's Mercedes.
The player will appear before Coventry Magistrates' Court tomorrow where he will face the two allegations.
West Midlands Police had been questioning the 27-year-old striker at Coventry's Little Park Street police station after he surrendered himself to arrest at around 10am on Monday following a nationwide appeal to trace him.
Officers had been able to question Hughes, 27, up until around 10pm after which they would have needed to apply to magistrates should they have wished to detain him further.
Rear seat passenger Douglas Graham, 56, from Coventry, died in the early hours of Sunday morning following the crash near Coventry city centre.
Meanwhile, Hughes's club confirmed that the player would take no part in the clash with Cardiff City at Ninian Park after failing to turn up for training.
