Motorists 'unprepared' for breakdown
One in four motorists take to the road unprepared, often not having a spare tyre or jack, new research has showed.
A poll of 1,000 drivers found that more than one in 10 did not belong to a breakdown recovery service and one in 20 had run down their car battery charging up a mobile phone.
The research, for car insurer Zurich, showed that up to half of drivers would try to change a flat tyre or jump start a car rather than wait for help.
Kathryn Pugh, spokesperson for Zurich, said: "Breaking down is often unavoidable and always inconvenient.
"However, there are a few things motorists can do to make the situation less stressful.
"Taking simple precautionary measures such as having valid breakdown cover and a basic toolkit in the car will help motorists get back on the road quickly without too much disruption to their schedule."
