Brown`s tears of joy as son is born
Chancellor Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah wept tears of joy as they celebrated the birth of their new son.
Mr Brown's wife gave birth on Friday morning at Edinburgh's New Royal Infirmary. Mother and baby were said to be "fine".
Politicians from all parties sent their congratulations to the couple.
The boy, who has not yet been named, is the couple's second child. Their daughter Jennifer died in January last year just 10 days after she was born prematurely.
Prime Minister Tony Blair was among the first to express delight at the news.
He said: "Cherie and I are absolutely delighted. I have passed our very best wishes to Gordon and Sarah. We are delighted that mother and baby are doing so well."
Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith said: "I am overjoyed at the news that Gordon and Sarah have had a baby boy.
"Children are an immense blessing and I am sure their new son will bring great fulfilment to their lives."
Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy said: "I'm naturally personally delighted for Gordon and Sarah. I wish them both every happiness with their new son."
And Scotland's First Minister Jack McConnell said he and his wife Bridget were "absolutely delighted" for the Browns.
