Prison population at new high
The prison population in England and Wales has reached a new all-time high of 74,023, the Prison Service has said.
The new total broke by 11 the previous record set in July, after spiralling up by 188 since last Friday.
The number of inmates has rocketed by 983 since August 29 - the equivalent of two medium-sized jails.
