Families `devastated` by crash deaths
The families of victims of a road accident which left four people dead have paid tribute to their loved ones.
The father of a teenager killed in the smash said the family was "devastated" and had not yet come to terms with the awful news. Stewart Wallace, 17, was driving one of the two vehicles involved in a head-on collision on the A77 between Girvan and Turnberry in Ayrshire yesterday.
Two other people travelling in the Astra being driven by Mr Wallace died and one was injured. The driver of the other car, a Polo, Mary Duffy, 59, of Girvan, died while her two passengers were injured.
Mrs Duffy's family paid tribute to the housewife at her home this afternoon, describing her a "pillar of society".
The Astra driven by Stewart Wallace was split in two by the impact of the crash, killing him and his two back seat passengers.
The 17-year-old, along with Frazer McKenzie, 16, of Hawthorn Drive, and Alyson Craig, 14, of Roodlands Road, both Girvan, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A 26-year-old man, the front seat passenger in the Astra, was seriously injured and taken to Ayr Hospital. He has not been named.
Two passengers in the Polo, a 75-year-old woman and a seven-year-old girl, were also taken to Ayr Hospital but their injuries were not believed to be serious.
Inspector Gordon Fulton, of Ayr road policing unit, said the crash was the most serious he had yet seen.
"I have been 27 years in the police with many of those in road policing and this actually is the worst incident I have come across," he said.
