Motorists rebuff public transport
Nearly a third of all motorists stuck behind the wheel in rush hour traffic refuse to give up their car in favour of public transport, according to a new opinion poll.
The independent survey found that drivers were reluctant to use the bus or rail networks despite a massive investment programme aimed at tempting them away from the motorways.
One in ten of those questioned had never used public transport and knew nothing about how to get to work by bus, train or metro - although 82% of them agreed that investment was sorely needed.
The poll, which was carried out ahead of TravelWise Week and the Europe-wide "In Town Without My Car" day, also revealed that more than 75% of respondents felt large companies should take a lead role in reducing traffic.
Almost 69% said their bosses should provide showers for people who cycle to work, while three-quarters said they should provide free or discounted travel passes.
Alison Harrington, a spokeswoman for TravelWise, said that motorists "do appreciate that investment in public transport and other alternatives to the car can make all of our cities better places to live in".
TravelWise teams, employed by local councils and bodies such as Centro, work with companies in their area to widen staff travel choices, promoting journeys by foot, bike, bus, train and tram.
More than 20% of respondents said they would definitely ditch the car and use public transport if their employer provided a discounted or free travel pass.
Commuters and shoppers are being encouraged to leave the car at home more during TravelWise Week - held from September 15 to the 21 - as part of a campaign to promote environment-friendly travel.
The campaign organisation involves major employers and health authorities in the drive to reduce congestion and promote healthier, more sustainable travel.
