Kelly shocked to be named
David Kelly was "shocked" to be named as the Iraq mole after being assured he would remain anonymous, the inquiry into his death heard.
Dr Kelly publicly maintained Ministry of Defence bosses had been "quite good" when he revealed he had briefed a BBC reporter.
But privately the weapons expert told a trusted contact: "I have been through the wringer."
Dr Kelly was speaking with Sunday Times journalist Nick Rufford shortly after being told by the MoD that he would be named in the next day's papers.
Mr Rufford, who had visited him at home, asked the scientist how he felt about his name coming out.
The journalist said he had replied: "I am a bit shocked, I was told it would all be confidential."
Mr Rufford said he had met Dr Kelly to establish whether he had been the source for claims that intelligence on Iraq was "sexed up" by the Government.
The former UN weapons inspector slashed his wrist at a beauty spot after being revealed as BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan's source.
Mr Rufford said he asked the scientist whether the report, which sparked the vicious row between Downing Street and the BBC, accurately reflected their conversation.
"He said 'I talked to him about factual stuff, the rest is bullshit'," Mr Rufford told Lord Hutton's inquiry at London's Royal Courts of Justice.
