Hamas declares ceasefire over
A senior Hamas official has declared an end to the ceasefire today shortly after Israeli helicopter missiles killed Ismail Abu Shanab, a leader of the militant Islamic group.
An Israeli F-16 fired a volley of rockets at a white Volkswagen Golf sedan belonging to Ismail Abu Shanab, killing three people, reports said.
The strike came after a suicide bombing in Jerusalem that killed 20 people and shattered the seven-week-old ceasefire.
Earlier, the Israeli army swept into the West Bank Palestinian cities of Jenin and Nablus, after the Israeli government authorised reprisals.
The Hamas official also vowed Hamas would avenge the Gaza City strike, telling reporters: "Hamas will respond with deeds and not words. Israel will regret this and we will prove to the whole world that Israel only understands the language of power and resistance," he said.
Palestinian militant faction chiefs declared a temporary ceasefire on June 29 under international pressure to advance a new US-backed plan for peace with Israel.
