Fans arrested at England match

More than 10 football fans were arrested on suspicion of public order offences ahead of England's friendly against Croatia, police said.

They were detained by Suffolk Police officers in Ipswich before the match at the town's Portman Road ground.

The alleged offences included affray and threatening behaviour. Some were held in order to prevent a breach of the peace, a police spokesman said.

Those arrested were all believed to be men, some of whom were taken to Stowmarket and Felixstowe police stations.

Around 600 officers were deployed in Ipswich in what was said to be the largest operation in Suffolk Police's history.

Earlier this month, Suffolk Police warned there would be "zero tolerance" for troublemakers at the match.

Superintendent Carl Puiy, in charge of policing the friendly, said: "On the day it's zero tolerance - racial, criminal and anti-social behaviour. We want the day remembered for the quality of the football and...not for any other reason."

England faces the prospect of being banned from Euro 2004 if fans repeat the serious disorder that marred the 2-0 victory over Turkey earlier this year.

Officers from Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, British Transport Police and 14 members of the Met's mounted section were on duty in and around Portman Road.
