UK soldier killed in Basra blast
A British soldier has been killed and two others injured in an attack on an Army ambulance in Basra.
The incident was confirmed by military officials in the city.
The injured suffered non life-threatening injuries, a spokesman said.
The ambulance was attacked by an improvised explosive device hidden in earth next to a lamp post, he added.
One of the servicemen was being taken to hospital for a routine matter when the attack took place, the spokesman said.
He added: "I can confirm that a British Army military ambulance operating on the outskirts of Basra town centre was attacked by an improvised explosive device hidden in a pile of earth next to a lamp post this morning.
"One of the three occupants, a serviceman, was killed, and the other two sustained non life threatening injuries.
"The ambulance was clearly marked with a red cross."
A MoD spokeswoman in London said: "We can confirm that there has been an incident on the outskirts of Basra.
"One British soldier has been killed."
