Gilligan's notes read in court
BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan today produced the skeleton notes from his meeting with Dr David Kelly - the meeting at the heart of the row over claims that the Government "sexed up" its Iraq weapons dossier.
Gilligan, the Today programme's defence
correspondent, said he could not produce a full transcript of the meeting as he had taken notes on a personal organiser which he could no longer find.
But he did present a print-out from the Palm Pilot which showed his notes on their talks about the September dossier in an annotated form.
It read: "Transformed a week before publication to make it sexier, a classic was the 45 minutes.
"Most things in the dossier were double sourced but that was single sourced.
"One source said it took 45 minutes to set up mobile assembly. That was misinterpreted.
"Most people in the intelligence world weren't happy with it because it did not reflect considered view they put forward.
"Campbell. Real information but unreliable included against yr (sic) wishes.
"Not included in the original draft. Dull. He asked if anything else could go in."
When his report was broadcast on May 29, seven days after his meeting with Dr Kelly on May 22, Gilligan quoted his unnamed source, identified as "a senior official in charge of drawing up the dossier".
Speaking about the dossier, but quoting from his source, he said: "It was transformed in the week before it was published to make it sexier.
"The classic example was the statement that weapons of mass destruction were ready for use within 45 minutes.
"That information was not included in the original draft.
"It was included in the dossier against our
wishes because it was not reliable.
"Most things in the dossier were double-sourced, but this was a single source."
