Grand Prix protester: man in court
A man was appearing in court today after a protester halted the British Grand Prix by running on to the track in front of the high-speed Formula One cars.
The protester gained access to the track at Silverstone, Northamptonshire, and began running into the path of race cars at around 1.15pm.
Spectators at the circuit and millions watching on television saw the man, wearing a kilt and a tam o'shanter, make his way to the fastest part of the track, the flat-out Hangar Straight.
He paraded in the middle of the track, with unidentifiable banners pinned to his clothing, forcing several cars to swerve to avoid him.
Race officials scrambled the safety car on to the track to reduce speed on the circuit, before a steward ended the protest, rugby-tackling the man to the ground.
Northamptonshire police said a 56-year-old man from London was appearing before Northampton magistrates charged with aggravated trespass.
