Mother has DIY birth
by CHRIS BROOKE, Daily Mail
When Enika John's baby began to arrive three weeks early, paramedics summoned by her 999 call raced to her house.
But once there, they found the front door locked.
When they called up, asking to break down the door, the mother-to-be refused permission.
By now somewhat flustered, she was concerned that when she went to hospital, the house would be left unsecured.
So Miss John, 31, carried on with her home delivery with ambulance call operator Caroline Bradley staying on the line to talk her through it.
Eleven minutes later baby Kai entered the world, weighing a healthy 7lb 5oz and announcing his arrival with a good scream.
It was only then that Miss John, cradling her newborn son, opened the bedroom window and threw her keys down to the waiting ambulance crew.
Yesterday, the customer services worker from Bradford said: 'I was asked for my permission to let them break into the house, but I said no.
'All I could think about was me going to hospital and the house being unsafe.'
Miss John, whose partner Emile Peltier had left for work just before her waters broke, added: 'I was panicking and thinking to myself, What's happening?.
'Caroline calmed me down and asked me what I felt and asked if I could feel his head. I didn't really know what I could feel, but I could feel that the baby was coming.
'It was only about two big pushes and he was born. He came out screaming so I knew he was all right.'
Miss Bradley said: 'I was very relieved when I heard the baby cry over the telephone.'
