Most Britons back war: poll
A clear majority of Britons now back the war against Iraq, according to a poll published on Tuesday.
The percentage who back military action is now 54%, compared to 38% a week ago, the Guardian/ICM tracker poll found.
The survey also found that opposition to the war fell from 44% last week to 30% this week.
Anti-war sentiments were particularly strong among the young, Liberal Democrats and those living in south-east England, according to the poll.
More 18 to 24-year-olds are opposed to the war than for it, the only age group where this is the case, ICM found.
Conservative voters were the staunchest supporters of military action, with 66% for and 22% opposed.
Labour voters were split 58% for and 29% against, and among Liberal Democrats, 41% were opposed to the war with 45% backing military action.
The opposition of 30% of those questioned by ICM was the highest level of disapproval of military action since Gallup recorded 31% against British troops fighting in Korea in 1950.
ICM interviewed a random sample of 1,008 adults by telephone between March 21 and 23. Interviews were conducted across the country and the results were weighted to the profile of all adults.
