Mystery bug victim 'improving'
A man believed to be the first in the UK to suffer from a mystery pneumonia bug is improving in hospital.
The 64-year-old businessman from the Manchester area has been able to speak to his wife.
He is currently in an isolation ward at a specialist infectious diseases unit at North Manchester General Hospital.
He is thought to be suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which has killed nine people and has been branded a worldwide health threat.
The first cases of SARS were reported in south China and Vietnam last month but outbreaks have since been reported across south east Asia and even Canada.
The man travelled from Hong Kong to Amsterdam and then from Amsterdam to Manchester on Saturday.
The Department of Health said he arrived at Manchester Airport on Saturday and was admitted to hospital yesterday.
Dr Roger Glew, medical director for Pennine Acute NHS Trust, which covers North Manchester General Hospital, said:
"He was having severe difficulty breathing yesterday but that has eased.
"When he came in he was seriously short of breath which is what you would expect. He is much less short of breath this morning."
