M6 closed after two crashes
Police have closed a section of the M6 after two serious accidents within moments of each other.
The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) said the collisions happened on the southbound carriageway, between junctions 14 and 13, close to Stafford.
The first accident, which happened at 6.15am, involved a saloon car and an articulated lorry and claimed the life of one person.
A CMPG spokesman said: "There were a number of casualties from the saloon, one occupant of which was pronounced deceased at the scene.
"A second collision also occurred on the southbound carriageway a short distance north of the original collision. This involved four goods vehicles.
"One of the goods vehicles' drivers was trapped and had to be released by the emergency services and was then conveyed to hospital.
"The southbound carriageway of the M6 has been closed to enable emergency services to deal with the incident."
The motorway, which has been closed southbound at junction 14, is expected to remain shut for several hours.
Witnesses to either accident are being sought.
