Police probe after spitting claims
A police investigation has been launched into an alleged spitting incident involving a Premiership football player.
Liverpool star El Hadji Diouf, 22, is alleged to have spat at Celtic fans during the Uefa Cup clash at Celtic Park, Glasgow.
The incident is understood to have sparked an angry reaction from a number of Celtic supporters who were in the 60,000-strong crowd.
Police said two Celtic fans had been arrested following the alleged incident but were released without charge shortly afterwards.
Strathclyde Police said an investigation had begun into the behaviour of the Senegal international during the quarter-final match.
The force's Supt Kevin Smith said: "He is the subject of an investigation.
"We won't speak to the player tonight but there have been complaints and television coverage and we have spoken to two people involved.
"Two people have been arrested but they have now been released."
A force spokeswoman said a large number of people were expected to be interviewed.
"It is too early to say whether this football player will be charged or not. A number of people have raised complaints about his actions and these will be looked into."
