US planes drop leaflets over Iraq
US planes have dropped 240,000 leaflets over northern Iraq today urging Iraqis to refrain from attacking US jets patrolling a no-fly zone and to think of their families - part of a psychological warfare campaign ahead of a possible US-led attack on Iraq.
The leaflets were dropped near the town of Tall Afar and Saddam Lake, according to a statement from the Germany-based US European Command.
"Think about your family. Do what you must to survive," the leaflets read and "Before you engage coalition aircraft, think about the consequences."
US forces started dropping leaflets this month. It was the third time that U.S. planes dropped leaflets over northern Iraq.
US and British planes have patrolled a no-fly zone over northern Iraq since the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War. The planes are based in the southern Turkish base of Incirlik.
Iraq does not recognize the zone and has been challenging coalition aircraft since December 1998.
