Man released over girls' shooting
A man arrested in connection with the murders of two teenage girls shot dead while celebrating New Year has been released without charge, police said today.
West Midlands Police said the man, 24, left custody overnight on bail pending further inquiries, as detectives continued their investigation into the shootings of Charlene Ellis, 18, and Letisha Shakespeare, 17, in Birmingham on January 2.
The man was released after officers obtained a 12-hour extension yesterday afternoon to continue questioning him following his arrest on Tuesday.
The force also earlier disclosed that officers had last month arrested a 22-year-old man from Essex, who was released on bail pending further inquiries into the shootings at the rear of a hairdresser's salon in the Aston area of Birmingham on January 2.
Charlene's twin sister Sophie, also an art student, and the twins' cousin Cheryl Shaw, 17, were both wounded in the shootings.
Detectives believe the four were the innocent victims of a long-standing feud between two rival north Birmingham drug gangs.
