Australians across four states are bracing for a brutal heatwave, with temperatures tipped to soar as high as 48C this week.

Western Australia is already baking under a slow-moving upper-level ridge that's locking in heat and driving temperatures higher, according to Weatherzone.

Daytime temperatures in the 40s will become widespread across much of WA before Tuesday.

By Wednesday, the system and hot air mass will move into southeast Australia.

'Computer models suggest temperatures could reach around 45C to 46C in parts of WA, SA, Vic and NSW, with some spots possibly hitting about 48C,' Weatherzone said.

The hottest conditions are expected inland, away from the state capitals, including Mildura in northwest Victoria.

The city is forecast to hit 45C on Thursday, with slightly higher temperatures possible in South Australia the same day.

Adelaide is on track to reach from 39C to 41C on Wednesday and Friday.

Melbourne is set to sizzle this week with temperatures climbing as high as 39C between Wednesday and Friday.

'While Wednesday stands out as the hottest day of the week for both Adelaide and Melbourne, there is a chance that Adelaide could reach 40 degrees again on Thursday with the hot air mass expected to linger over SA's south,' Weatherzone said.

The extreme heat won't stop at Victoria and SA.

Sweltering conditions are tipped to sweep into New South Wales later in the week, with Sydney in the firing line.

The city is forecast to endure four days of elevated temperatures from Wednesday, topping out at 36 degrees on Saturday.

A change is expected on Sunday, with showers cooling the city to below 30C.

Weatherzone has urged Aussies to stay hydrated and follow the classic advice to 'Slip, Slop, Slap' during the heatwave, and to keep an eye on the latest forecasts.
