Rock climber is pulled from the water after falling from cliff in the UK

A rock climber has been airlifted to hospital after plunging from a clifftop on the Dorset coast. 

A HM Coastguard helicopter was spotted landing in Weston on Sunday afternoon following reports that a person had fallen from a clifftop in Portland

RNLI Weymouth lifeboat and coastguard rescue teams from Wyke and Portland, also attended the scene near Mutton Cove on the west side of the island. 

The person was rescued from the water using a hoist. 

Dorset Police confirmed that South Western Ambulance Service transported the person to a nearby hospital. 

Their condition remains unknown. 

A spokesperson for the force said that the incident 'involved a rock climber who fell off the cliff.'

'The ambulance and coastguard were in attendance, and the person was taken off to hospital by the time we got to the incident.' 

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard agency said: 'At 12.49pm today, HM Coastguard received reports of a casualty who had fallen from cliffs at Mutton Cove in Portland. 

'Coastguard Rescue Teams from Wyke and Portland were sent, along with RNLI Weymouth lifeboat and an HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter.' 

'The casualty was winched to the top of the cliff by helicopter and put into the care of South West Ambulance Service for onwards medical care.' 

South Western Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
