Chilling dashcam footage has emerged of a police officer saying 'I'm going to hit him' before fatally running down a shoplifting suspect who was fleeing the scene on foot.

The Pueblo Police Department in Colorado released the footage of the June 3 death of suspect Antonio Herrera.

Officers were responding to reports of an alleged shoplifter at Famous Footwear. When they arrived, the suspect fled from the scene and was pursued both by officers on foot and in the car.

Body camera footage captured the moment an officer on foot told his colleagues 'he's got a gun. He pulled a gun out on me. Careful, he's got that gun in his hand.'

He refused multiple commands to drop his weapon, and officers noticed he was running toward an occupied car.

Fearing he was about to jump in the car and flee, the officer driving the patrol car said 'I'm going to hit him.'

In the split second before he was run down, Herrera turned briefly to look at the car as it pursued him.

Then, the harrowing footage shows the car ramming into him.

The driver appeared to visibly speed up from the slow pace he had been driving, and rammed Herrera in the back at speed.

The gun that he was holding flew from his hand as he crumbled and fell to the floor.
