Three daredevils who risked their lives by jumping across the roofs of high storey apartment complexes on the Gold Coast have been blasted by authorities.

A police investigation is underway after shocking footage emerged of the young men running across the roof of The Sands Apartments before leaping into the top of the adjacent St Tropez complex in Surfers Paradise on Tuesday.

The footage showed one man watching on from a balcony as his mates ran across The Sands roof.

He eventually joined the pair on the roof as they hurled themselves across the chasm, making it across with a jump and roll manoeuvre.

The trio not only risked charges and possible jail time but also a life-threatening 10 metre fall onto the footpath below.

Horrified onlookers were seen watching on from high rise balconies.

The dangerous stunt has sparked widespread backlash, led by Queensland police minister Dan Purdie.

'Well, these clowns need to pull their heads in,' the former police officer said.

'It's often our frontline services, our police and ambos and hospital workers that have to pick up the pieces and put these people back together.'

Queensland Police is now investigating the footage and working to track down the young men involved.

Officers were called to an address on Orchid Avenue - which runs parallel to the Esplanade, opposite The Sands - for a welfare check on Tuesday.

'Initial information provided to police was that two people were observed jumping between buildings,' the police statement said.

'Officers attended the scene and conducted a search, but those involved had left the scene.'

Online viewers blasted the dangerous behaviour, with many labelling those involved as 'idiots' and 'dumb and dumber'.

'I watched painfully for ages thinking one might miss,' one wrote.

Another added: 'The boys just kept running across the buildings, preparing to make the jumps and eventually did several times. Then they just took off.'

Anyone with information the identity or whereabouts of the men involved is urged to come forward.
