During the cold, dark and seemingly endless winter months, candles are the perfect way to brighten up a room.

However, while they do wonders for your ambience - trying to remove spilled wax from your carpet makes you wish you'd kept the light on.

Fortunately, advice from a DIY YouTube channel has shared how to remove candle wax from a carpet for free.

Posting a video to the social media platform, the channel Family Handyman, which has over 230,000 subscribers, explained the best way to remove the sticky substance from stubborn carpet.

Introducing the video, presenter Kel said: 'Candle wax accidentally dripped on a carpet might look like a hopeless mess but it's actually quite simple to clean up'.

Noting what to do first, he said you will require a butter knife to be able to scrape off any hardened wax.

Kel continued: 'After you're done doing that, you can hoover up any loose wax'.

Next up, he advised dampening a white cloth and placing over the spot where the wax spillage occurred before applying an iron on its highest setting for 10 seconds over the top of the cloth.

He said this will help to draw the wax out of the carpet and into the towel.

If the towel dries out, the DIY expert said you can wet it again to allow it to absorb wax, which you only need to swap out once it has too much wax on it.

Finishing the demo, Kel said: 'Finally, you can spray it with carpet cleaner and scrape it with a spoon to remove the remaining wax and then you can dab it with a clean towel and let it air dry'.

Reacting to the video in the comments section, users were full of praise for the cleaning hack, with one commenting: 'I used to work in a church where they'd get many splatters of wax on the carpet.

'We used this trick, but just used dry paper towel and held the iron on it for a second at a time until the wax was gone. Worked like a charm and no good cloth wasted.'

A second added: 'Hi, I cannot thank you enough you saved me today. I had a really bad spill of liquid wax accidentally on my apartment's carpet.

'This trick really did work for me. You are my life saviour today'.

Another enthused: 'Wow, this really works! I used paper towels as suggested by one of the readers. Saved the day and it was a big spill'.

A fourth remarked: 'Had been trying to tackle this exact problem the other week and thought I was doomed. This fixed it to 100 times better within minutes! So glad I found this!'
