Awkward detail is exposed in female-only spaces in Perth car park: 'This is ridiculous'

A popular comedian has taken aim at a car park for making the female-only designated spaces wider than the others.

Nicholas Schweighoffer, also known an Choccy Dan, who runs the Misfit Minds YouTube channel, shared a video to TikTok on Wednesday after he visited the Pier Street car park, in Perth.

'This is the most ridiculous thing that I've ever seen, female parking,' he said.

He pointed to the bright pink sign with an arrow pointing up to indicate the area is to be used by women only.

He then pointed to a blue parking sign at another parking space nearby, which can be used by other motorists.

Choccy Dan decided to check whether the female parking bays were wider by lying on the ground.

'It's at least 20 per cent wider,' he said.

He slammed the difference in width and labelled Perth a 'sexist city'.

'I think that is disgusting, it is sexist. The City of Perth needs to be held accountable for their actions,' he said.

The video, which has been amassed more than 300,000 views, immediately struck a chord with social media users.

Some defended the move saying the extra space was necessary.

'It's for like baby strollers and it's closer to the entrance so it's a little bit more safe for mummas and babbas,' one person wrote.

Others argued the parking bays discriminated against other drivers.

'I totally agree with you that it is sexist, not in this day and age city of Perth,' one person wrote.

Some questioned why the parking bays have been labelled if it was set up to protect female shoppers.

'Wouldn't the creeps just know to hang out there now they know exactly where they'll park,' a third added.

A City of Perth Council spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the move to introduce female friendly parking in the shopping centre was made after the area was identified as a space where anti-social behaviour was impacting shoppers.

'The carpark is staffed seven days a week by a City of Perth Parking Officer, 24/7 CCTV and the female-only bays are situated near to the carpark office,' the spokesman said.

'No complaints have been received in the last 18 months on the 'Pink Parking' bays'.

The council introduced female-only parking in 2016 and the multi-level car park at the shopping centre has 28 parking bays reserved for women.

The female-friendly parking spaces were created following safety and security concerns.

The car park consists of 700 parking spaces in total.

Former City of Perth CEO Martin Mileham said at the time the parking bays are fitted with brighter lights, emergency help buttons and are situated near exits.

Drivers quickly reacted by referencing female privilege and questioned whether these prime spots impact the elderly, disabled, or parents with prams.

Others insisted safety was a serious concern for women using enclosed parking spaces in the dark.
