Sex killer back behind bars
Convicted murderer and rapist Richard Crawford was tonight taken into custody after agreeing to meet detectives at an address in Brighton, police said.
Detectives were contacted and Crawford arranged to meet them at a "neutral" address, a Sussex Police spokeswoman said.
Arrangements were tonight being made to transfer Crawford back to Scotland.
The police spokeswoman thanked the public for their help in finding Crawford, who was taken into custody shortly before 6pm.
Crawford, 41, from Paisley, near Glasgow, was jailed for life in February 2000 for the murder and rape of Mary Lynch, 87, and ordered to serve eight years for the attempted rape of 79-year-old Mary Dorans.
He was released on bail after appealing against his conviction and arrived at an Edinburgh court for a hearing on July 12, but vanished before the case was called.
The Scottish Conservative Party welcomed the news that Crawford had been arrested but said it raised the question of why he had been arrested in the first place.
A spokesman said: "People whom the police describe as dangerous, who have been convicted of murder and rape, must not be freed to walk the streets of Scotland.
"We will change the law."
