A man has been arrested after police locked down a suburb in search of a gunman who allegedly shot dead a woman and wounded another man.
Emergency services were called to a home on Robb Place in South Mackay in central Queensland just after 4.30pm on Wednesday following reports a woman had been shot.
She was declared dead at the scene while another man was found with non-fatal injuries to his hand.
Police issued a Public Safety Preservation Act about 5.20pm, locking down an area bound by Robb Place and Paradise, Archibald, Kindermar and Denton streets.
A 31-year-old man was taken into custody about 7.45pm outside a fast-food restaurant along the Bruce Highway, near Hinton Street, police confirmed.
He wasn't injured and is currently assisting police with investigations. No charges have yet been laid.

The exclusion area remains in place, despite the arrest.
Members of the public have been urged to avoid the exclusion area while residents have been told to stay indoors until further notice.
The woman was allegedly shot in the head while the man had a bullet wound to his hand, the Courier Mail reported.
Images from the scene show police diverting traffic as officers swarm the area.
Queensland Police thanked residents affected by the emergency situation for their 'patience and understanding while this matter is ongoing'.
Anyone with information has been urged to contact police.
