Debbie thought she was buying a $550 TV on Facebook Marketplace. But when she opened the box it came in, she got a very nasty surprise
A woman has been scammed into paying hundreds of dollars for a box full of books, sugar and cat litter she thought contained a TV.
Debbie, from Craigmore in Adelaide's northern suburbs, agreed to pay a man $550 for a TV she had seen advertised on Facebook Marketplace on Tuesday.
A security camera on her garage caught the man pulling up in a red Ford Escape at 11.30am to personally deliver the supposed 65-inch TV to her front door.
Debbie, from Adelaide, paid $550 for a TV off Facebook Marketplace but instead got a box full of kitty litter, sugar, books and a hammer
A security camera on her garage captured the man walking the box up her driveway
Debbie opened the box to find styrofoam protecting 20 litres of cat litter, a bag of sugar, Ganglife Australia and Stealth Garden books, and a pink-handled hammer inside.
By the time she realised she had been scammed, the man was already long gone.
After reporting the con to police, others in the area came out claiming the same man has also duped them with similar scams.
Debbie claimed the man had told her he won the TV in a raffle but did not want it.
South Australian Police are now investigating the incident and looking for any clues that might lead them to the scammer, who has since deleted his Facebook profile.
