Melbourne, Hosier Lane: Young girl saved from terrifying abduction by Good Samaritan recalls horrifying moment stranger called her 'pretty' before grabbing her arm and trying to take off with her

A 14-year-old girl claims a strange man called her 'pretty' just seconds before he attempted to abduct her in one of Melbourne's best-known laneways.

The Melbourne teenager was on a school excursion to see the graffiti artwork in Hosier Lane in the city's CBD on Wednesday, November 15.

However, at 10.30am she'd fallen behind her teachers and was approached by a man she didn't know.

Police allege the man made comments on the girl's appearance before grabbing her and attempting to drag her further down the lane.

In a press conference on Wednesday, the traumatised girl recalled the incident.

'He stuck his head in my face … then he started to talk about how I was very pretty, then he grabbed my arm and tried to pull me closer to him,' she said.

'My mind was all over the place, I wasn't really aware of what was really going on until he grabbed my arm.'

Fortunately, another unknown man saw the girl's distress and stepped in, pretending to be her teacher.

He managed to get her away from the alleged attempted abductor under the guise of catching up with the rest of the students.

The 14-year-old's mother used the press conference to ask the brave stranger to come forward.

'I would love to thank him for what he did,' she said.

'If not for him, we don't know what the outcome might have been.'

She added it was a 'horrific phone call to get' when her frightened daughter finally escaped.

'She was hysterical at that point. She was really scared and he really hurt her when he grabbed her,' she said.

The girl said she's been afraid to be alone in public since the alleged attempted kidnapping.

'I feel scared when I see strangers in the street. I don't really want to go out in public without older people to protect me,' she said.

Detective Senior Constable Joshua Guy described the intervening man's actions as 'nothing short of heroic'.

'He saw a situation that wasn't right and intervened in a way that was subtle and unobtrusive,' he said.

He added the alleged attack was an act of 'predatory behaviour'.

Victoria Police have been unable to identify the alleged offender so have shared images of him and a woman he was travelling with.

The man is described as having dark skin and a slim build.

At the time of the alleged attack, he was wearing dark long pants, a dark hoodie with a red hood, black shoes with white soles and dark sunglasses.

He was also carrying a black backpack and black bum bag.

The woman appeared to be Asian with a solid build and long black hair.

She was wearing a purple puffer jacket, a beige or light pink T-shirt, blue jeans and white and fluoro orange shoes.

She was also carrying a blue backpack.

Police said the pair fled on foot on Flinders Lane and asked anyone with more information to contact Crime Stoppers.
