GCSE results day is swiftly approaching - tomorrow students across the UK will find out what grades they achieved.
Pupils have been told to brace themselves for a 'shock' as 300,000 fewer top marks are set to be awarded as grading returns to pre-Covid standards.
This comes after A Level results day last week (August 13) where the record post-Covid plunge in grades left 60,000 teenagers scrambling for university places - there were 73,000 fewer A*s and As awarded compared to last year.
If this is yours or your child's first results day, it's important to note when you can expect to receive the GCSE certificates so you can begin to plan ahead.

When will GCSE certificates be sent out?
GCSE certificates will be sent out to schools roughly three months after results day, so around November this year.
In most cases the school will post them to your address. They should contact you to inform you if you need to collect them yourself instead.
If you need to collect them, it's important to do so as soon as possible as they may be needed for college applications or job interviews - they also cost money to replace.
Schools will keep your GCSE certificates for a minimum of one year after they have been issued - after this they either destroy them or send them back to the exam board so make sure you don't forget about them.
Some schools will get rid of them after the one year mark and others may hold on to them for longer, however it's risky to leave it that long.
How will students receive their GCSE certificates?
Students will receive their GCSE certificates in the post, sent by their school to the address they have on record for you.
If you have moved house, make sure to update your address with your school.
As mentioned earlier, your school should contact you if you need to collect the certificates rather than having them delivered.
Make sure that when your certificates arrive, they are all there and all the information and grades printed on them are correct

What you should do if a GCSE certificate is missing
If you receive your certificates and one or more are missing, you should contact the exam board you sat the exam with.
The most common exam boards in the UK are AQA, Pearson, Edexcel and OCR.
Your exam board should tell you if the certificate got sent out at all - you can also contact your school to see if they ever received it.
If you notice any mistakes on your certificate such as name spellings or your date of birth you should inform the exam board as soon as possible as for some boards the changes are only free for the first three months after it's sent.
However, AQA say they can only amend personal details based on your birth certificate.
They're unable to amend name changes made by deed poll after the results of the exam have been issued.

Can you get a GCSE certificate replaced?
If you lose your GCSE exam certificate or it gets damaged and you need a new one, you need to contact the exam board.
You can't get a new certificate but you can get a 'certified statement of results', which can be used in it's place to prove your results to employers, colleges and universities.
However, you will need a form of ID such as a passport or driving license to prove your identity and you will also need to pay a fee.
The cost of replacing certificates can range depending on the exam board from £10 to £69 - it's best to keep your certificates somewhere safe as soon as you receive them, to avoid forking out for replacements.
AQA charge an administration fee of £43.00 and Pearson charge a standard replacement certificate UK delivery charge of £52.
Pearson aim to complete applications within 20 working days, so if you need the certificate for an upcoming interview or application, make sure you get the request in early - - priority replacement is £73.
You can find out on the government website, which exam board you should contact, if the one you sat your exams with no longer exists.
