Asda starts a price war with £50 spectacles
Asda has started a major price war with high street opticians.
The supermarket has launched an all round price for glasses - regardless of prescription strength - in a move which could force other spectacle retailers to follow suit.
From today, customers will be able to buy glasses of any prescription for £50 for standard frames and £70 for designer frames.
Eye on the market: Asda is sparking a price war with an all round price for spectacles. Glasses of any prescription will be £50
The retailer claims that opticians bump up the price of spectacles with aftercare 'add- ons' and adjustments.
Nik Langrish-Dixon, head of optical at Asda, said: 'You could go in expecting to pay £25 for a pair of glasses but, depending on your prescription, could easily end up shelling out over £200.
'We are offering a flat price for a pair of specs, no hidden extras, no nasty surprises.'
