A highly-anticipated feature by many smartphone users, Chat Lock began rolling out from Monday 15 May 2023.

Read on below for everything you need to know about WhatsApp's latest feature in its messaging service.
Chat Lock allows users to hide secret conversations with a password or biometric data
What is WhatsApp new feature Chat Lock?
ChatLock gives users an added layer of privacy by allowing them to protect their most private conversations with a password.
Locked messages are secured in a separate folder and the sender's name is hidden - even to others with access to your phone.
The Chat Lock has been created as part of WhatsApp's continued efforts to keep messages 'private and secure'.
In a blog post, it said: 'Locking a chat takes that thread out of the inbox and puts it behind its own folder that can only be accessed with your device password or biometric, like a fingerprint. It also automatically hides the contents of that chat in notifications, too.
'We think this feature will be great for people who have reason to share their phones from time to time with a family member or those moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra special chat arrives.'
However, WhatsApp users have joked that cheating has now been 'upgraded', because people will be able to keep certain conversations hidden and private.
How does Chat Lock work?
To lock a chat, open the WhatsApp app and tap on the name of an individual conversation or a group chat.
You will now see a lock option, which will prompt you to enter your device password or biometric to secure that chat.
'Locking a chat takes that thread out of the inbox and puts it behind its own folder that can only be accessed with your device password or biometric, like a fingerprint,' WhatsApp explained in the blog post.
'It also automatically hides the contents of that chat in notifications too.'

To reveal your locked chats, simply pull down on your WhatsApp inbox and enter your phone password or biometric.
WhatsApp - which is owned by Meta - claims that Chat Lock will be useful across a number of different settings.
'This feature will be great for people who have reason to share their phones from time to time with a family member or those moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra special chat arrives,' it explained.
'We're going to be adding more options for Chat Lock, including locking for companion devices, creating a custom password for your chats so that you can use a unique password different from your phone's,' it concluded.
