British man found dead in Spain with an arrow through his heart
Londoner Mark Nougher was found dead with an arrow in his heart
A British man has been found dead at his home in Spain with an arrow in his heart.
Londoner Mark Nougher, 53, was discovered on Monday morning by a flatmate when he returned from a weekend trip away.
A crossbow the dead man owned was lying nearby.
Police Mr Nougher, an amateur archer and keen weapons collector, may have died in a freak accident.
Foreign Office staff were today trying to contact his ex-wife and grown-up daughter.
They remained in Britain when he emigrated to Spain around two years ago.
A post-mortem examination was due to take place yesterday in Alicante.
A police source said: 'There were no signs of a break-in and we've discovered no suicide note indicating this man may have wanted to take his own life.
'The suspicion at this stage is that he may have died as the result of a freak and tragic accident.
'We are hoping the autopsy will shed more light on what has happened.
'We have quizzed the Spanish flatmate of the dead man as a matter of routine.
'He has been questioned as a witness so we can find out more about the victim and his life.'
A spokesman for the Civil Guard, which is heading the probe, said: 'I can confirm a British man has been found dead at his home with an arrow in his chest.
'The matter is still under investigation.'
The victim, last seen on Saturday, lived in the village of Torremendo near the Costa Blanca resort of Torrevieja.
Investigators suspect his body, which had bite marks left by his pet dog, may have laid undiscovered for up to two days.
He owned the property where he was found dead, a second-floor apartment in a newly-built block of flats.
He is thought to have taken a lodger in recently to help him pay bills.
