Weather improves after weekend of snow
Conditions were today expected to ease across Britain following the appalling weather which wreaked havoc across the country over the weekend.
But while main roads across much of the country were reopened, there were fresh fears of floods as snowfalls began to melt.
Although further snow was anticipated in Scotland today, it was not expected to be a repeat of the blizzards and gales which brought parts of the country to a virtual standstill on Saturday.
A spokesman for PA Weathercentre said: "Scotland will see spells of rain, some heavy, and preceded by snow in the north."
Weather conditions dramatically improved across North Yorkshire and the Scottish Highlands yesterday, which had been among the worst affected areas.
Three major pile-ups on the A1M in North Yorkshire involving 41 vehicles left around 15 people injured on Saturday.
Rescue helicopters battled against appalling conditions to airlift people to safety as snowdrifts up to 20ft paralysed some areas.
PA WeatherCentre said it would be generally milder over the next few days, although areas of Britain, particularly in western parts of Scotland, Wales and the south-west of England, would experience heavy rainfalls and strong winds.
There could be up to 15mm of rainfall in parts of Scotland today, bringing with it a risk of flooding.
