ARM nears videophone prototype
A prototype of the powerful new microprocessor needed to run videophones will be available in the next six months, according to microchips designer ARM Holdings, one of Britain's fastest-growing hi-tech companies.
Unveiling pre-tax profits for the first half of the year up 79% to £7 million, ARM said its patented ARM10T microprocessor, licensed last month to US telecommunications manufacturer Lucent, will be in production during the second half of the year.
Chief operating officer Jamie Urquhart said: 'The microprocessor is like the engine in an electronic system. The higher level of performance from the the ARM10T means it is also suitable for automotive applications.'
ARM, which makes its money from royalties, now has 34 licensing partners compared with 26 last year and revenues in the six months to 30 June climbed 48% to £27.5 million. In line with its stated policy, there is no dividend. Fully diluted earnings per share were 2.3p.
