Land Rover's Russia boost
Land Rovers are being produced for the first time in Russia. The models go on sale to wealthy Russians at around £27,200, 20% cheaper than those imported from Britain.
Despite Russia's economic crisis, Land Rover's parent company BMW believes there will be a growing market for the off-road vehicles.
A new assembly line is taking advantage of the special duty-free status of the Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, Russia's most westerly point, wedged between Lithuania and Poland.
'In the year 2000 we will produce 1500 BMW cars and 2000 Land Rover models at this plant,' said Avtotor chairman Vladimir Shcherbakov, Rus-sian partner in the joint venture. BMW is supplying kits and monitoring quality at the Kaliningrad plant.
