BT rules out AT&T mobile merger

BT has denied it is considering a merger of its mobile phone operations with those of US rival AT&T. A spokesman said a report in a Sunday newspaper misinterpreted comments by BT chief executive Peter Bonfield.

Bonfield was quoted as saying BT was not in full merger discussions with AT&T. But asked about a merger of their mobile operations, he said: 'Anything is possible'.

Separately, BT also ruled out a bid for Finnish mobile phone company Sonera. 'We looked at it but couldn't see the strategic benefits for us,' a senior BT employee. The Wall Street Journal last week said BT had shown interest in a bid for Sonera.
