£480m windfall cheques unclaimed

About 80,000 Scottish Widows policyholders have yet to claim windfall cheques averaging £6,000 paid as a result of the takeover of the life assurer by Lloyds TSB last year.

Scottish Widows began sending out the first batch of payments last month, but now says that it has been unable to track down many of its 1.6m policyholders. The Edinburgh-based company said a team had been set up to find them.

There is speculation that the unclaimed cash could amount to £480m.
