Treasury veteran joins RBS
AFTER three months of statutory gardening leave, Sir Steve Robson, the 30-year Treasury veteran who oversaw railway privatisation and the planned Underground public-private partnership, is to take on a directorship at Royal Bank of Scotland.
Following a well-trodden path to the City from Whitehall, Robson, 57, takes up his post at the Scottish bank in July. He can expect to pick up about £30,000 annually for a part-time non-executive directorship, more than a quarter of what he would have been earning as second permanent secretary at the Treasury.
Before leaving the civil service in January he said he had had no intention of going full time in investment banking. His former boss at the Treasury Sir Peter Middleton, now chairman of Barclays, is one of the best paid directors in the City.
Royal Bank chairman Sir George Mathewson said Robson was being brought in for his public-sector and industrial experience.
