Merger talks hoist Anite

SHARES in IT services group Anite sparked up after the company said a possible merger was on the cards. The FTSE-250 company said it had held talks with an unnamed suitor, although it added discussions were at 'a very preliminary stage'.

Anite provides technological services to the public sector as well as the travel, telecoms and finance industries. In addition to its UK base, it has operations in mainland Europe, including Germany and the Benelux countries.

In January, its interim figures showed sales of £85.7m against £83.9m for the six months the previous year.

Since then, Anite has brought three companies, including the £13m acquisition of computer group ICL's Government application business in April.

Anite shares rose 15p to 166 1/2p following the news.
