Sunday newspaper share tips
EACH weekend, This Is Money brings you a round-up of shares being recommended in the Sunday City pages. Click here for the Mail on Sunday's Midas column. Below are tips from other newspapers.
Sunday Telegraph
Cadbury Schweppes must chew over some big strategic decisions this year and a bid for Pfizer's Adams confectionery division may be in the offing. Either way investors should see some positive action in the share price. Buy.
Fund manager Liontrust Asset Management has outshone many of its peers despite the moribund nature of the UK stock market. The shares trade at a reasonably full price but are well worth tucking away. Buy.
Investors bottom fishing in the bombed out technology sector should take a speculative punt on OverNet Data (20p). The AIM-listed company develops software for mobile phones and counts Vodafone and Microsfoft among its customers.
It's time for investors to fly back to airports group TBI. The shares (62 3/4p) have begun to creep back up on talk that French construction group Vinci may be circling again after pulling its 90p-per-share offer in September.
Take a look at Peter Hambro Mining (136 1/2 p). The shares look set for a good run as more information about the size of the gold reserves at its second mine in the far east of Russia emerges.
Metal galvanizing and engineering firm Metnor (245p) has notched up record orders through its Norstead contracting business and profits are expected to increase by more than 30% this year. Buy.
Sunday Times
Electricity-network monopoly National Grid (509p) will face tough questioning about its planned £15bn merger with gas pipeline group Lattice when it unveils annual results on Thursday. The deal has increased net debt but will form one of the biggest utilities in the world. Analysts are behind the merger and this should keep the share price up.
Investors brave enough to seek out a safe haven in the holiday industry might want to book into caravan park operator Parkdean Holidays, which is floating this week at 100p. The price to earnings ratio is cheaper than sector rival Holidaybreak and chairman Graham Wilson has made money for shareholders before.
Sunday Express
Construction group Birse has built firm market gains this year and uncertainty over exposure to the rail industry should be offset by a strong order book. Longer-term investors in shares at 16 3/4p should be rewarded.
A combination of strong demand and low competition in the workspace arena bodes well for Bizspace, the AIM-listed company spun off from property group Safeland two years ago. The shares are well worth a look at 18p.
Retailer JJB Sports has been knocked by concerns that it may face a hefty fine through being named in an investigation into price fixing of replica shirts but the shares, at 344 1/2p, have probably been punished enough.
First Choice Holidays suffered last week on the back of poorly received figures from UK rival MyTravel but shares at 106p, buying on today's weakness could yield sunnier returns for patient investors.
Shipping services provider Clarkson is worth a longer-term punt. Shares (228 1/2p) dipped after the market took fright at first-quarter figures but these suffered from a comparison with very strong figures in the previous year and group has strong market positions.
