Recovery helps easyJet to soar

The emergence of the global economy from recession helped boost passenger numbers at easyJet.

The Luton-based airline said it carried 3.69m passengers in November up 10.2% on the year.

This meant loads over the month increased to 85.7% from 84.8% and it transported 49.5m passengers over 12 months to November. This is an increase on 45.8m passengers on the year.

Last month easyJet (up 12p to 585.5p) said it would pay its first ever dividend in 2012 following a jump in full year pretax profit.

Chief executive Carolyn McCall reported better-than-expected pretax profits of £154m in the year to September 30 - an increase of £99.3m.

The results were achieved despite the Icelandic volcano ash cloud that caused easyJet to cancel 7,314 flights, disrupting the travel plans of 960,000 passengers.
